Do you buy real maple syrup or imitation? I’m all for the real stuff (even though it does cost so much more!), so I was thrilled to hear this news, out this week, about the surprising health benefits of real maple syrup (love this!) …

Researchers from the University of Rhode Island say that maple syrup is loaded with antioxidants, which, until now, no one knew were there. The news was announced by plant scientist Navindra Seeram at the American Chemical Society conference in San Francisco. He and his research team found more than 13 new compounds “linked with human health” in samples of Canadian maple syrup, some of which are believed to have “anti-cancer” properties.

The reason for the antioxidants? “We speculated that the sugar maple is wounded when it is tapped for its sap, and that it secretes phenolics as a defense mechanism,” he said.

This news makes me feel better about drizzling a little syrup on my pancakes. You too? Yay for maple syrup!
